This yoga pose gets its name from the plough – a popular farming tool. Like its namesake, this pose prepares the ‘field’ of the body and mind for deep rejuvenation.
The process for doing Halasana is as follows :
1) Lie on your back with your arms beside you, palms downwards.
2) As you inhale, use your abdominal muscles to lift your feet off the floor, raising your legs vertically.
3) Continue to breathe normally and supporting your hips and back with your hands, lift them off the ground.
4) Allow your legs to sweep in a 180 degree angle over your head till your toes touch the floor.
5) Hold this pose and let your body relax more and more with each steady breath.
Halasana strengthens and opens up the neck, shoulders, abs and back muscles, calms the nervous system, reduces stress and fatigue and tones the legs as well.
Yoga practices can make us more and more sensitive to subtler and subtler sensations in the body. Paying attention to and staying with finer and finer sensations within the body is one of the surest ways to steady the wandering mind.
